St. Louis Cardinals veteran right-hander Adam Wainwright, 42, will start the season on the injured list.
On the 23rd, St. Louis manager Olly Mamol reported Wainwright’s injury in an interview with local media, including the ‘St. Louis Post-Dispatch’.
Wainwright was injured while joining the World Baseball Classic (WBC) as the U.S. representative.
According to Mamol, Wainwright injured his groin muscle while training in the weight room ahead of the WBC finals.
The expected return time has not yet been announced, but coach Mamol predicted that it would take a considerable amount of time for the veteran selection to return, saying, “It will take several weeks.”
Wainwright, who was heading into his 18th season in St. Louis, was scheduled to start the season opener, but an injury disrupted those plans.
Wainwright went 11-12 with a 3.71 ERA over 191 2/3 innings in 32 games last season. He threw more than 190 innings for two consecutive seasons and showed off his health, and recently competed for the WBC USA.
Having signed a one-year contract with St. Louis ahead of the 2023 season, he predicted that the 2023 season would be his last year, but he ran into unexpected difficulties even before he started.
It’s not yet clear who will fill Wainwright’s vacant spot, but the St. Louis Post-Dispatch has identified right-hander Jake Woodford as a likely replacement.
Woodford, who recorded an average ERA of 2.23 by throwing 48 1/3 innings in 27 games last season, is showing good form with an ERA of 2.04 by digesting 17 2/3 innings in 5 games this spring camp.
Meanwhile,스포츠토토 coach Mamol said that bullpen pitcher Wilking Rodriguez also suffered from right shoulder pain, which hindered preparation for the season. Recruited from the New York Yankees in the Rule 5 draft, he is expected to start on the injured list.
